About Bordeaux
Bordeaux, with a population of over 664,000, is the capital city of the region of Aquitaine and
the department of the Gironde. Bordeaux and its urban community represent the sixth largest city in France. Located 557 km south-west of Paris,
50 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 200 km from Spain, it enjoys a privileged geographical location. The richness of its surrounding countryside,
and in particular its world famous wines, have enabled Bordeaux to establish many international links.
With its exceptional architectural heritage, Bordeaux is regarded as a "city of art”. As
in Bristol, the river and harbourside are major attractions for visitors. Major projects such as economic regeneration and urban renewal
which have taken place during the past few years have transformed the city and made it a major international tourist destination. The city's
state-of-the-art tram system links surrounding communes with Bordeaux city centre, and has proved to be extremely popular with commuters and
tourists alike. Excellent park and ride facilities are provided at all strategic points around the city, contributing significantly to a
reduction in traffic volume in the city centre. The superb motorway ring road around Bordeaux also has a significant impact in this
respect.
In 2007 Bordeaux was officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the largest urban
entity to be granted that honour. Bordeaux is applying to be the European Capital of Culture in 2013.
