The aims of the Bristol-Bordeaux Association as approved by the Charity Commission are:
To advance the education of the public in the subjects of French Language, Culture, History, Life and
Activities.
To advance the education of students at educational establishments in Bristol and the Counties of
Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
To strengthen the educational and cultural links between this country and France, and more particularly
between the cities of Bristol and Bordeaux.
To further these aims, the Association arranges discussions, meetings and social events for
members and guests, and, where appropriate, liaises with its French counterpart, l'Association Bordeaux-Bristol.
The Bristol-Bordeaux Association has assisted in the funding of the Bordeaux
mini-assistants scheme in local primary schools every year since 2004. The Bordeaux University teacher training department sends student teachers
to Bristol for two weeks to work as language assistants and to gain an understanding of the local school system as well as improving their
English. The students specialise in teaching English in Bordeaux primary schools once they qualify. Five local primary schools take
part each year, with support from the Local Education Authority, and many have maintained links with their mini-assistant and gone on to
co-ordinate school to school projects the following year. The scheme was devised and organised by Alix Hughes of BITA (Bristol International Twinnings Association), with recent support from Sally Benwell, former education
officer with the Bristol Local Education Authority.
